A crossing of times: volcanic stone, marble, and a living city
The Triumph of Candelaria, an obelisk of Carrara marble carved in Genoa in 1778, remains a devotional and artistic beacon in the center of the square. A few steps away, the Cruz de Montañés from 1759 recalls the seafaring origins of a site that was a parade ground and a precursor to the port. Between the two, the historic Pila —public fountain of the 18th century recovered in 1986— completes a set that tells centuries of urban life in just a few square meters.
The historical imprint coexists with the 20th century without stridency. The former headquarters of the Círculo Mercantil, now Chamber of Commerce, built in 1935 by Marrero Regalado, exhibits rationalist lines softened by regional nods. Next to it, bank buildings from the 1950s introduced modernity without abandoning the palette of island basalt tones. For this reason, the square feels coherent even in contrast.
The Palacio de Carta, built between 1721 and 1752, showcases its basalt masonry and wooden balconies as an emblem of Canary civil baroque. Its courtyards, when open, are havens in the heart of the city. Very close by, the Matriz de la Concepción Parish reminds us that the city was born here, amid processions and maritime trade.
