The Cliffs of Los Gigantes: a volcanic wall facing the Atlantic

Los Gigantes with its cliffs are one of the most impressive landscapes of Tenerife. A wall of black volcanic rock that drops straight down into the ocean, with walls reaching 600 meters high in some sections. With our live webcam you can see in real time the state of the sea and the environment before planning your visit.

A wall of rock that rises from the seabed

At the northwest end of Santiago del Teide, the land abruptly cuts into vertical cliffs that reach the water and continue down about 30 meters below the surface. This coastline stretches for several kilometers to the Teno Point, the westernmost point of the island. The real scale of the place is only fully perceived when you reach the Los Guíos Beach and look up: the village and the port, so small at the foot of the rock, give the exact measure of what you have in front of you.

The origin is volcanic, like the rest of Tenerife. For millions of years, layers of lava accumulated to form these basalt masses. Then, the constant force of the Atlantic carved the rock until it achieved that characteristic vertical shape. The result is a landscape where fire and water have worked together for ages.

What to see and do in Los Gigantes

The area offers an unusual combination of extreme nature and well-established services. In the water, the diving is one of the most valued activities: the volcanic seabed is full of caves and tunnels, with exceptional visibility. The kayak under the cliffs, on the other hand, is the most direct way to measure their real size from sea level. Boat trips from the port also allow you to see dolphins and whales that frequent these calm waters throughout the year.

For swimming, the area has three beaches with very different characteristics. The Los Guíos Beach is the closest to the cliffs, with black sand and direct views of the rock. La Arena Beach, a few minutes away, has fine dark sand with a promenade and restaurants. Finally, Playa Chica is a secluded cove, ideal for snorkeling. On land, the viewing point trails offer perspectives from high up that complement the view from the sea.
