Telde Gran Canaria, the oldest city on the island between history and coast

Telde is the second most populated municipality in Gran Canaria, with over 100,000 inhabitants, and the oldest on the island. Before the Castilian conquest, it was the center of the aboriginal kingdom of the east of Gran Canaria and the residence of the legendary warrior Doramas. The neighborhood of San Juan and Cristo de Telde

The San Juan Neighborhood is the founding nucleus of Telde and the historical heart of the municipality. Its cobbled streets, houses with wooden balconies, and quiet squares retain the atmosphere of a city that was important long before tourism arrived at Gran Canaria. The Basilica of San Juan Bautista, declared Cultural Heritage of Interest in 1991, presides over the . Its cobblestone streets and 17th and 18th-century houses surround the. Inside it preserves the Cristo de Telde, a unique image of the crucified Christ in the world: it was made with corn dough and vegetable dyes by indigenous artisans from Guatemala o Mexico in the 16th century and arrived on the island as a gift from America. Its manufacturing technique — identical to that of pre-Columbian Mayan images — makes it an item of incalculable value.

The main chapel of the basilica also holds a Gothic-Flemish altarpiece from the 16th century and a triptych painted brought from Flanders in the same era. Both pieces are among the most valuable of the religious heritage of Canary Islands.

The neighborhood of San Francisco and San Gregorio

The San Francisco Neighborhood is the other major historical neighborhood of Telde. Its narrow, cobbled alleys, with houses that were inhabited by Franciscan friars after the conquest, maintain a well-preserved colonial ambiance. The most important monument in the neighborhood is the Iglesia de San Francisco, built in the 16th century, with a façade of volcanic stone and an interior that houses several images of artistic value.

On the other hand, the San Gregorio Neighborhood adds a third dimension to the historic center of Telde, with stately houses from the 18th and 19th centuries and squares lined with palm trees that recall the prosperity of the municipality in the centuries of Atlantic trade. The archaeological sites

Telde contain some of the most important archaeological sites of Gran Canaria. The most well-known is the Cuatro Puertas Archaeological Park, a large artificial cave with four entrances carved into the rock, which the aborigines used as a meeting place, worship, and celebration of rituals. Its interior features a main room of large dimensions and several side chambers. Additionally, on the plateau above the cave, there are rock engravings and a almogarén — a solar cult sanctuary — of great archaeological value.

The site of Tufia, on the northern coast of the municipality, is also unique: an aboriginal village built on a volcanic rock by the sea, with living caves coexisting today with fishermen’s houses. It is one of the few places in Canary Islands where the aboriginal architecture and vernacular Canarian architecture coexist in the same space.

The beaches and the coast

The coast of Telde have almost 10 kilometers of coastline with very varied beaches. The Melenara Beach is the most popular and family-friendly, with dark sand, a promenade, beach bars, and a quiet swimming area suitable for all audiences. The La Garita Beach, to the north, has a more local and marine atmosphere. From there, one can see the Bufadero de La Garita, a hole in the volcanic rock through which the ocean water emerges in pressurized jets with a very characteristic sound. It is also one of the most photogenic natural phenomena on the eastern coast.

The Playa del Hombre and the Hoya del Pozo are more rugged and frequented by surfers. On the other hand, the Salinetas beaches and Ojos de Garza, to the south, have a more industrial setting due to their proximity to the airport, but retain bathing areas and underwater ecosystems of interest for snorkeling.

The Barranco de los Cernícalos

The Barranco de los Cernícalos is the most important natural space of the municipality and one of the most popular in the east of Gran Canaria. It shares territory with the neighboring municipality of Valsequillo and features a forest of wild olive trees with flowing water year-round, creating lush vegetation that is very rare in the eastern part of the island. The main path runs for about 7 kilometers of low difficulty up to the highest waterfalls on the island. Therefore, it is a trail very frequented by families and hikers of all levels.

Gastronomy in Telde

The gastronomy of Telde combines fresh fish from the coast with Canarian cuisine from the interior. The restaurants on the promenade of Melenara and La Garita serve fresh fish of the day, grilled limpets, and seafood in a very authentic local atmosphere. In the historic center, taverns and restaurants such as La Tunera offer traditional Canarian cuisine: wrinkled potatoes with mojo, old clothes, vegetable stews and grilled meats. How to get to Telde

Telde is about 14 kilometers from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by the GC-1 highway (approximately 15-20 minutes by car).
