San Miguel de Abona is a municipality in the south of Tenerife that packs three worlds into a small area: a charming historic centre at 600 metres above sea level, two of the best golf from Canary Islands courses on the coast and the fishing village of Los Abrigos, where you can eat the best fresh fish in the area. Golf in San Miguel de Abona

The municipality is a benchmark for golf in Canary Islands. Two courses stand out for their quality and location:

Golf del Sur is one of the best-known courses in Tenerife, with 27 holes and ocean views. It has hosted international competitions and has an academy for all levels.

On the other hand, Amarilla Golf offers an 18-hole round in a volcanic setting by the sea. The CanariasLife webcam shows the course live. Both courses benefit from the south's sunny climate, which allows play almost all year round.

Los Abrigos: a fishing village with character

Los Abrigos is the municipality's coastal hub and one of the most authentic fishing villages in the south of Tenerife. Its seafront promenade and restaurants by the harbour are known across the island for the quality of their fresh fish and the and seafood .

In fact, many Tinerfeños come down to Los Abrigos specifically to eat. Parrotfish, wreckfish, octopus and limpets grilled, always with wrinkled potatoes and mojo, are the speciality. The atmosphere is local and unpretentious.

Next to the village is Yellow Mountain, a golden-toned volcanic cone that contrasts with the blue of the sea. It is a short, photogenic walk.

Historic centre of San Miguel

The town of San Miguel de Abona, in the mid-mountain area, has a centre declared Cultural Heritage. Its cobbled streets and centuries-old houses with wooden balconies preserve the feel of a traditional Canarian village.

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel, dating from the 17th century, is the most notable building. Also worth a visit is the Casa Museo El Capitán, with exhibitions on the municipality's history. It is a peaceful stroll and a good excuse to head up from the coast.

Beaches and coastline

San Miguel's coastline has several swimming options:

The Playa de San Blas has volcanic sand and gentle surf. The natural pools in the Los Abrigos area allow a calm swim among the rocks. There are also little-known coves near the golf courses with crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkel and diving.

Hiking and nature

The Barranco de la Orchilla offers a route through volcanic landscape with native flora. The old Camino Real de San Miguel once connected the village with the coast and can now be walked as a trail.

Additionally, the Montaña de Guaza, on the border with Arona, is a short climb with panoramic views over the south coast and the ocean.

Gastronomy in San Miguel de Abona

There are two distinct dining experiences. In Los Abrigos, fresh fish of the day at the harbour restaurants. In the historic centre, guachinches serve home-style Canarian food: wrinkled potatoes with mojo, scalded gofio, local cheeses and grilled meats, all with wine from the area at a good price.

Festivals and traditions

The parties of San Miguel Arcángel, in September, fill the village with pilgrimages, folk music and traditional dances. The Carnivals of San Miguel also draw good crowds. There is also a craft fair bringing together master craftspeople from the area.

How to get to San Miguel de Abona

The Tenerife South Airport is just 10 minutes away by car. From Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje it takes 15 minutes via the TF-1 motorway. There are TITSA buses connecting the coast with the municipality.

Getting up to the historic centre from the coast takes about 10 minutes via the TF-28.
