Candelaria, the Marian Villa of southeastern Tenerife
Candelaria is a municipality on the southeastern slope of Tenerife, about 20 kilometers south of Santa Cruz, built on ancient volcanic flows that tint its coastline black. It is the Marian Villa of the Canary Islands: here, the Virgin of Candelaria, patroness of the archipelago, is venerated, making the town one of Spain's major pilgrimage centers. The average temperature hovers around 22 °C all year, the sea is sheltered by a breakwater that calms the waves, and the black sand and pebbles contribute to that unmistakable mark of the Canary coastline.
The beach and the promenade

History, culture, and surroundings
The Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria, completed in 1959 and elevated to minor basilica in 2011, is the great symbol of the villa. Its 45-meter bell tower dominates the horizon and receives around 2.5 million visitors a year. In front of it, in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, nine bronze sculptures of the menceyes —the guanche kings of Tenerife— created by sculptor José Abad watch over the shore. About 400 meters to the south, the Cueva de Achbinico is the first Christian temple in the Canary Islands. On February 2nd and the night of August 14th to 15th, thousands of pilgrims arrive walking from all over the island for the great pilgrimage. The rest of the year, the promenade, fresh fish restaurants, and the Old Road of Candelaria complete a visit that goes far beyond the beach.
