What is the Fisherman's Museum?

The Fisherman's Museum in Puerto de Santiago is one of the most unique cultural spaces in Tenerife. Located in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, near Los Gigantes, this museum pays tribute to the local fishing tradition and contemporary art.

At first glance, it appears to be a small building among old houses facing the sea. But its facade, created by French artist Bernard Romain, is a unique piece that represents the fisherman, the sea, and the culture of the area.

The history behind the museum

This space was born as a tribute to maritime life since the times of the guanches. Over the years, it has gone through different stages. One of the most important was in the early 2000s, thanks to the collaboration between Mayor Pancracio Socas and Bernard Romain.

Between 2002 and 2003, Romain transformed the exterior and interior of the museum. His work includes details such as a central trapezoidal window and surfaces covered in tiles that simulate the sea. There are also three-dimensional sculptures of fish, a boat, and a fisherman presenting his catch.

Art and permanent exhibitions

On the upper floor, there is a bright room dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Some works by Romain himself are exhibited there, although they are not always well appreciated. On the ground floor, you will find nets, boats, and historical objects related to fishing, accompanied by informative panels created with the University of La Laguna.

A cultural destination in Tenerife

After a period of decline, the museum is regaining activity thanks to the current administration. Visiting the Fisherman's Museum in Puerto de Santiago is an excellent way to learn about the maritime history of Tenerife and enjoy a piece of outdoor art.
