Valle Gran Rey, the tourist heart of La Gomera

Valle Gran Rey is the main vacation destination in La Gomera and yet it remains a tranquil place without mass tourism. Its ravine descends vertically from the summits of the Garajonay National Park to a coastline of black sand beaches, palm groves, and white houses that give it a bohemian atmosphere hard to find on other islands.

Moreover, it is known for having some of the best sunsets in the Canaries: watching the sun set from the coast of La Playa or from the port of Vueltas becomes a daily ritual for locals and visitors.

Beaches of Valle Gran Rey

The municipality has several beaches of volcanic sand, each with its own character:

The La Calera Beach is the most central, with a promenade, terraces, and a relaxed atmosphere at sunset. On the other hand, the Vueltas Beach, next to the fishing port, is quiet and easily accessible.

The Charco del Conde is noted for its calm waters, ideal for families and snorkel. Meanwhile, the Playa del Inglés, more secluded and nudist, offers a wild setting and one of the best night skies on the island for viewing stars.

It is also worth the La Puntilla Beach, frequented for diving, and the Charco de la Condesa, a reference for lovers of surf.

Whale watching and water activities

Valle Gran Rey is one of the best spots for Canary Islands for the dolphin and whale watching in the wild. Boat excursions from the port of Vueltas depart for trips that also visit the Natural Monument of Los Órganos, a formation of basalt columns on the northern coast that can only be seen from the sea.

In addition, the sheltered bay allows for kayak, paddle boarding y diving in calm waters, even for beginners. Local companies offer equipment rental and guided tours.

Hiking and viewpoints

The Valle Gran Rey Ravine is an essential route that connects the coast with the interior of the valley through palm groves, traditional terraces, and small villages like El Guro y Seda House.

From the municipality, there is easy access to the Garajonay National Park and the César Manrique Viewpoint (also called Palmarejo Viewpoint), one of the most visited viewpoints on the island. Other viewpoints with spectacular views are the El Santo Viewpoint and the Queso Curve Viewpoint.

In fact, in the Upper Valley, settlements like Taguluche, Las Hayas o Los Granados preserve traditional Gomera architecture and the palm groves from which guarapo is extracted to produce the palm honey.

Gastronomy in Valle Gran Rey

The restaurants at the port of Vueltas and the terraces of La Calera offer fresh fish of the day, always with wrinkled potatoes y mojo. The almogrote and the palm honey are a fixed presence on the menus, along with the watercress stew and the Gomera cookies, a typical sweet found in the valley shops.

At night, the promenade has a relaxed atmosphere with live music and terraces open late. Undoubtedly, gastronomy is an essential part of the experience in Valle Gran Rey.

Festivals and traditions

The Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors, is the most important celebration in the municipality. In July, the boats in the port are adorned, and the image of the Virgin sails through the bay in a maritime procession.

Also worth noting is the offering of the Ramo on August 16th, where local products and traditional pastries are offered to the sound of the Gomera drum dance, one of the oldest cultural expressions of Canary Islands.

How to get to Valle Gran Rey

The most common way is to first get to San Sebastián de La Gomera in ferry from Los Cristianos (Tenerife) and from there take the road GM-1 to Valle Gran Rey, about a 45-minute drive with spectacular views.

There is also a direct catamaran service from Tenerife to the port of Vueltas in season, and ferry lines bus that connect the capital with the valley.

If you arrive by plane at the La Gomera airport (in Alajeró), the trip to Valle Gran Rey is about 40 minutes by road.
