San Bartolomé, the rural center of Lanzarote

San Bartolomé occupies the geographic center of Lanzarote and is the municipality that best preserves the agricultural essence of the island. Its landscape of lava fields, vineyards protected by stone walls (zocos) and white farmhouses is the most authentic image of an island declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Monumento al Campesino and the legacy of César Manrique

The Monumento al Campesino, designed by César Manrique, is located at the edge of the municipality and is a tribute to the farmers of Lanzarote who knew how to cultivate volcanic land with ingenuity. The sculpture, made with recycled water tanks, is one of Manrique's most well-known works.

Next to the monument is the Casa-Museo del Campesino, a space that reproduces traditional Lanzarote architecture. Here you can see how artisanal products are made and taste local cuisine in its restaurant, surrounded by whitewashed patios.

La Geria and Lanzarote wine

Part of the wine region of La Geria extends through the municipality of San Bartolomé. The vineyards, planted in holes dug into volcanic ash (enarenados) and protected from the wind by semicircular stone walls (zocos), create a unique landscape worldwide.

In fact, the wineries in the area produce the famous Malvasía wine from Lanzarote, an aromatic and mineral white that is the gastronomic identity of the island. Several wineries offer tours and tastings.

Historical heritage

The area of San Bartolomé has a tranquil and rural atmosphere. The Casa Mayor Guerra, from the 18th century, was the residence of one of the most influential families on the island and today is one of the most prominent civil buildings in Lanzarote.

It is also worth visiting the Museo Tanit, dedicated to women in the history of the Canary Islands, and the Casa Ajei, cultural center of the municipality. The white streets, leisurely squares, and traditional architecture complete a pleasant walk through the village.

Hiking and volcanic landscape

The municipality is surrounded by landscapes shaped by the eruptions of the 18th century.The lava fields, volcanic mountains, and paths between vineyards offer routes of hiking y cycling easy and visually interesting hiking.

Gastronomy in San Bartolomé

The local cuisine is rooted in Lanzarote. Wrinkled potatoes with mojo, gofio, island cheeses and fresh fish are the foundation. However, the absolute star is the Malvasía wine, which accompanies any meal.

The flea market from San Bartolomé, on weekends, is a good place to buy local products and try tapas. Additionally, the restaurant at the Casa del Campesino offers traditional cuisine in a typical setting.

How to get to San Bartolomé

The municipality is in the center of Lanzarote, just 10 minutes from Arrecife and the airport via the LZ-2. From Costa Teguise o Puerto del Carmen it takes about 15 minutes. There are Intercity Bus services connecting the main hubs of the island.
