The marine fauna of El Hierro

El Hierro, the westernmost island of the Canary Islands, is famous for its clear waters and volcanic seabeds, full of life. Many species of fish live there, but two stand out in particular: the parrotfish and the grouper.

old woman, the queen of Canarian cuisine

The old woman (Sparisoma cretense) is a typical parrotfish of the rocky seabeds of the Canary Islands. It is one of the most prized fish by fishermen and chefs in the islands, due to its white and tender meat. It is usually prepared boiled or grilled, with wrinkled potatoes and mojo.

the grouper, the great protagonist underwater

The grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) is a large and long-lived fish that lives among rocks and underwater caves. In El Hierro, it is one of the stars of diving because it can be seen up close in protected areas. It is a vulnerable species, which is why its conservation is very important.

Rocky seabeds and marine reserve

The rocky seabeds of the island, formed by lava flows, provide refuge and food for many species. In the south, the La Restinga Marine Reserve – Sea of Calm protects an important part of this coastline and has made La Restinga one of the best diving spots in Europe.

To enjoy the sea of El Hierro, you can watch live areas such as Timijiraque or the natural pools of La Maceta.
