Santiago del Teide: where the mountain meets the sea
This Municipality is one of the most complete municipalities in the northwest of Tenerife. In just a few kilometers, the landscape transitions from high pine forests to volcanic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, with ravines, historic hamlets, and black sand beaches in between. A territory of contrasts between peak and coast
In the high areas, the mountain pines scent the air and provide shade in summer, with the peaks of Teide forming a scenic backdrop. Inland, the Teno Park hides deep ravines and ancient hamlets hanging from the rock. The Chinyero volcano, which last erupted in 1909, offers simple trails over black lava surrounded by endemic vegetation: a route that directly showcases the geological youth of the island.
As you descend towards the coast, the cliffs of Los Gigantes drop steeply into the sea. At the foot of these cliffs lies Los Guíos, with dark sand and very clear waters, and just beyond, the famous beach of La Arena, recognized for its environmental quality. These are two of the highest-rated beaches in the municipality, each with a very distinct character.
Culture, tradition, and vibrant nature
In the historic center, the church of San Fernando Rey stands out, a simple yet well-preserved example of Canary religious architecture. Nearby, the municipality of Arguayo preserves one of the most unique traditions of Tenerife: hand pottery, without a wheel, just as the Guanchesdid. On the coast, the Museum El Pescador preserves the maritime memory of those who rowed out into the Atlantic. The village center also hosts the Baile de Magos in May and the Santiago Apóstol festivities in July, two of the most vibrant events on the local calendar.
Flora changes rapidly according to altitude: from cacti and tabaibas by the sea to pines and red tajinastes at higher elevations. Among the fauna, the giant lizard of Tenerife, an endemic species and symbol of the island, stands out. Off the coast, the waters of the northwest are among the best spots for whale and dolphin watching in all of the Canaries, with the presence of cetaceans throughout the year.

How to get there and practical tips
Santiago del Teide is located in the northwest of Tenerife, accessible via the TF-82 road from the TF-1 highway. Wear comfortable shoes for the lava trails, sunscreen year-round, and bring enough water if you hike up the mountain. Before heading out, check our webcams to see the weather conditions in the area.
