San Juan Festivals in Haría: tradition and culture in Lanzarote

Haría, in the north of Lanzarote, is known as the "Valley of a Thousand Palms." Besides its landscape, this quiet village holds a very rich cultural life. Its major event of the year is the San Juan Bautista festivals, the patron saint of the municipality, celebrated in the second half of June, right at the end of spring.

A week of festivities around San Juan

The program changes every year, but usually lasts around a week and combines tradition, music, and events for all ages. Here are some of the most anticipated moments:

• The pilgrimage: groups and folklore bands travel through the village and bring their offerings to the saint.
• Folklore festivals: in the plaza of Haría, groups from Lanzarote and other islands perform traditional dances like isas and folías.
• The Haría Awards: a recognition for residents, artisans, and producers of the municipality.
• The Night of Fire: the eve of San Juan, June 23rd, traditionally celebrates the Burning of Facundo, with bonfires, fire dances, fireworks, and a street party.
• The patron saint's day: on June 24th, there is a mass at the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, followed by a procession through the village streets.

Haría, culture all year round

If you can't go in June, Haría has other cultural events throughout the year. On Saturday mornings, the plaza hosts the Haría market, featuring crafts and local products. The village also has the Casa-Museum of César Manrique, the house where the artist spent his last years.

Nearby are also the Mirador del Río, the Cueva de los Verdes, and the Jameos del Agua, so it's easy to combine the festival with a route through the north of the island.
