Jameos del Agua: Nature and Art on Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua is one of the most emblematic places in Lanzarote. This natural space was formed after the eruption of the La Corona volcano, which created a volcanic tube over 6 kilometers long, part of which extends under the sea (the so-called Tunnel of Atlantis). The part closest to the sea is known as Jameos del Agua.

The word ‘jameo’ comes from the local aboriginal vocabulary and refers to an area of the tunnel where the ceiling partially collapsed, leaving a natural entrance. The full name, ‘Jameos del Agua’, comes from the underground lake that exists within the area. This lake is filled with filtered water that comes from inside the tunnel, even below sea level.

A unique ecosystem

Within this underground environment lives a very special species: the blind crab (Munidopsis polymorpha). These small white crustaceans measure about one centimeter and are endemic to this lake: they do not live anywhere else in the world. They have become the main symbol of the place.

In the darkness, a white spider hides on the ground, its color contrasting with the dark background, highlighting its shape and legs.

Art and culture in a volcanic landscape

César Manrique, the most recognized artist and architect of Lanzarote, designed this complex integrating art and nature. The design features gardens and the famous turquoise water pool, in which swimming is not allowed and is one of the most photographed images of the place.

Additionally, it houses an auditorium built inside a volcanic cave. There, concerts and cultural events are held throughout the year, reinforcing the artistic and social value of Jameos del Agua.
