The benefits of cycling
Cycling is one of the most complete and enjoyable ways to exercise, and in the Canary Islands, it can be practiced year-round thanks to its climate. Here are some of its main benefits:
- Strengthens body and mind: combines physical exercise with time outdoors.
- Burns calories and trains the heart: it is an aerobic exercise that improves cardiovascular health.
- Tones muscles, especially those in the legs, glutes, and abdominal area.
- Cares for joints: being a low-impact sport, it is gentler on knees and ankles than running.
- Reduces stress and helps you rest better.
- Saves on transportation on short daily trips.
- Cares for the environment, because it generates no emissions.
- Favors social life, thanks to group outings and cycling clubs.
- Allows you to discover unique landscapes at a pace that is impossible by car.
Tips for cycling safely in the Canary Islands
Cycling around the islands is a magnificent experience, but it's good to be well-prepared:
- Wear a helmet: in Spain, it is mandatory on interurban roads, and for those under 16 on any road.
- Make yourself visible with reflective clothing and lights, especially in tunnels and at sunset.
- Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun: although the temperature is mild, radiation in the Canary Islands is intense.
- Be aware of the wind: the trade winds can blow strongly in some coastal areas and in the hills.
- Carry your mobile phone and, if possible, go out with a partner or in a group, especially on mountain routes.
Also remember that vehicles must leave at least 1.5 meters of distance when overtaking a cyclist.
Where to cycle in the Canary Islands
In the islands, there are routes for all levels, and cycling is one of the most practiced sports by both residents and visitors. Additionally, road, mountain, and electric bicycles can be rented on all islands. Some examples:
- La Palma: the road to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, which ascends to over 2,400 meters above the sea of clouds.
- Gran Canaria: the roads in the summit areas, towards Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves. We explain it in detail in Gran Canaria, the cyclist's paradise.
- Tenerife: the ascent to Teide National Park, one of the most renowned in Europe among cyclists.
- Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: flatter routes among volcanic landscapes, although with more wind.
Before heading to the summit, check the weather and visibility live with our Teide webcam.
