All about Plátano de Canarias: benefits and cultivation

The Canary Island banana It is one of the Canary Islands' most emblematic fruits. It is known for its sweet flavor, intense aroma and the small dark spots on its skin. In addition, it is the only banana grown in Spain, as there are no plantations on the mainland.

Origin and history

The banana plant arrived on the islands in the 15th century. At first it was a minor crop, but from the late 19th century it became one of the driving forces of the Canarian economy. Today, the brand is managed by ASPROCAN, which brings together all the producers. In addition, since late 2013 Plátano de Canarias has held the European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) label.

Varieties grown on the islands

In the Canary Islands, bananas from the Cavendish, of the species Musa acuminata. Within this group the Pequeña Enana, Gran Enana and Gruesa Palmera, a local selection, stand out. Where Plátano de Canarias is grown

Currently, this fruit is produced on six islands: Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, La Gomera and Lanzarote. Of all of them, Tenerife and La Palma account for most of the production.

The banana plant needs an average temperature close to 25 °C, lots of light and considerable humidity. That's why the best plantations are on the coast, below 300 metres in altitude. There, the mild climate allows the fruit to ripen slowly on the plant. As a result, it gains sweetness and aroma.

Speckles, a distinctive feature

The famous «speckles» on the skin are the best-known trait of this banana. They don't mean it's past its best: on the contrary, they indicate it is perfectly ripe. It also has little starch and a lot of natural sugar. That's why it tastes sweeter than other imported bananas.

Properties and benefits

Like any banana, it is a very nutritious fruit. It provides potassium, fiber, B vitamins and quick energy thanks to its natural sugars. That's why it's a good companion before or after exercising. It's also easy to carry and needs no preparation.

In short, whether at home, at work or after a workout, any time is good to enjoy a Canary Island banana. It is a unique product, tied to the landscape and history of the islands.
