Tenerife. The wind cave

What is the Cueva del Viento in Tenerife?

The Cave of the Wind, in Icod de los Vinos, it is the longest volcanic tube in the European Union and one of the largest in the world. It was formed about 27,000 years ago with the lava flows from Pico Viejo, the neighboring volcano of Teide, and is a unique place to understand the volcanism of Tenerife.

It has about 18.5 kilometers of topographically mapped galleries, distributed over three overlapping levels, with shafts, terraces, lava lakes, and other formations created by the lava as it solidified. Inside, there are also small invertebrates adapted to the darkness, some exclusive to this cave.

What is the guided tour like

The tour lasts approximately two and a half hours in total. It begins at the visitor center with a brief talk, followed by a short transfer and a walk to the entrance, and ends with a guided tour of about 45 minutes through the interior of the tube, in small groups with helmets and flashlights.

Only a section of the cave is visited, which is preserved as it was formed, without walkways or artificial lighting. Therefore, the number of daily visitors is very limited.

The tours are conducted in Spanish, English, German, and French. Children under 5 years old cannot participate, and it is not recommended for people with claustrophobia or mobility problems.

Cueva del Viento belongs to the Cabildo de Tenerife, which manages the visits through a public company.
