Sabinosa: The Most Authentic Soul of El Hierro

At the western end of El Hierro, at the end of the El Golfo valley, lies Sabinosa, one of the most tranquil and traditional villages on the island. It belongs to the municipality of La Frontera and is the last inhabited area before reaching the wilder zone of western El Hierro.

A village between the mountain and the sea

Sabinosa stands on a hillside, with white houses and sloping streets from which one can see the sea and the entire El Golfo valley. It retains a very authentic rural atmosphere, with stone walls, orchards, and vineyards, and its sunsets over the Atlantic are among the most beautiful on the island.

What to see near Sabinosa

  • The Pozo de la Salud: a well excavated in the early 18th century whose mineral medicinal waters brought fame to the area, next to which a hotel-spa currently operates.
  • Playa del Verodal: a beach of dark reddish sand, surrounded by cliffs, very beautiful but with strong currents, so it is not always suitable for swimming.
  • The Juniper: the forest of junipers twisted by the wind, one of the symbols of El Hierro.
  • Mirador de Bascos: with spectacular views over El Golfo.
  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Kings: the hermitage of the island's patron saint, in La Dehesa.

A little further east, in the valley, are the natural pools of La Maceta, which you can see live with our webcam, and the Charco Azul.

Living traditions

Sabinosa is famous for its folklore. Its residents have preserved traditional dances and music, such as the baile del vivo, which is still danced at festivals. The big event for the whole island is the Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes, celebrated every four years.

In local cuisine, you cannot miss the herreño cheese, El Golfo wine, watercress stew, or fresh fish.

Hiking and starry skies

From Sabinosa, paths lead to La Dehesa and El Sabinar, and in the area there are several sections of the GR 131 and the Camino de la Virgen. Additionally, the low light pollution in the west of the island makes this area an ideal place to observe the stars.

Sabinosa is, in short, the perfect place to discover the calmest and most authentic side of El Hierro.
