The image shows an outdoor sculpture surrounded by an arid natural landscape with low scrub vegetation, typical of the Canary Islands. In the background, some rustic-style constructions and possibly the silhouette of a mountain or volcano in the distance, which could be Teide, can be seen. The sculpture appears to be made of stone and has an abstract design that suggests a human figure or a motif related to local culture.

San Isidro – Art and Nature in Los Cardones

Wooden sculpture in the Parque de Esculturas de Los Cardones, in San Isidro (Tenerife), with the sea and the mountain in the background.

Art, nature, architecture and respect for the environment: this is the symbiosis offered by the Parque de Esculturas de Los Cardones, in the south of Tenerife. A unique cultural heritage, designed to be preserved and enjoyed for generations.

The park is located between San Isidro and Granadilla de Abona, on an estate of 80,000 square metres. It was created by the German sculptor Gernot Huber, who died in 2021 at the age of 92, and since 2014 it has been managed by the Fundación Canaria Gernot Huber.

The estate contains more than 100 sculptures, some of them monumental, made with materials from the island such as stone and wood, and in some cases with steel and glass.

All the works are connected by a network of paths over 2,000 metres long, in harmony with the landscape. They are arranged around the founder's former residence, built of volcanic tuff, which blends traditional Canarian style with modern living and working. From this volcanic hill, surrounded by vegetation, you can make out both the Teide as the Red Mountain of El Médano.

Many sculptures are kinetic, that is, they move with the wind, something this southern area never lacks. The park's aim is to bring art closer to students and the general public. In addition, the foundation awards grants to sculptors, who leave part of their work here.

Gernot Huber also created another sculpture park in Germany, which is now run by his sister foundation and operates during the summer months.

How to visit the park

The park is not open every day. Traditionally it holds open days one Sunday a month during the winter season, from November to April, and accepts guided visits for small groups with advance booking. As dates can change, always check with the Fundación Canaria Gernot Huber before you go.

The park is very close to El Médano: you can round off the trip with a walk along the coast and see the Montaña Roja live from our La Tejita beach webcam, or discover the rest of webcams of Granadilla de Abona.
