Plaza de España: the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Plaza de España is the symbolic and geographical center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the largest square in the Canary Islands. Located right in front of the port, its large marine lake changes color according to the sunlight and the time of day, becoming one of the most photographed scenes on the island. Thanks to our real-time webcam, you can see live everything that happens in this square before getting closer.

History and architecture: from the castle to the lake

Beneath the square lies one of the best-kept secrets of the capital. On this very site stood the Castle of San Cristóbal, built to defend the coast from pirate attacks during the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, part of its walls and original structures can be visited in the underground museum that opens beneath the square, making the square a space where history and modernity coexist uniquely.

The most recent renovation, completed in 2008 with a project by Herzog & de Meuron, transformed the appearance of the square, equipping it with the current lake, which collects water directly from the sea. Therefore, the mirror of water is not decorative but marine, and its color varies according to the sky conditions and daylight.

What to see and do in Plaza de España and surroundings

The square is the natural starting point to explore downtown Santa Cruz. From here, guagua lines depart to any point on the island, and just a few steps away is the pedestrian Calle Castillo, ideal for shopping, and the Plaza de la Candelaria. Likewise, the Mercado Nuestra Señora de África and Parque García Sanabria are less than ten minutes on foot.

Throughout the year, the square transforms according to the festive calendar. The Santa Cruz Carnival —declared of International Tourist Interest—turns this square into the main stage for one of the most important carnivals in the world. Additionally, throughout the year, book fairs, concerts, and craft markets are held that continuously enliven the space. The webcam of Plaza de España allows you to see live the setup for events before approaching.
