The Millenary Drago

The Millenary Drago is the most important natural and historical symbol of Icod de los Vinos and one of the icons of Tenerife. It is the largest and oldest specimen of Dracaena draco known in the world: it measures about 20 meters in height, has a trunk circumference of 20 meters, over 300 main branches, and is estimated to weigh around 140 tons. It was declared National Monument in 1917 and even appeared on the 1,000 peseta bill.

The drago is located in the Drago Park, a botanical garden of three hectares next to the Iglesia de San Marcos. In addition to the tree, the park includes a garden of Canary endemics with cardones, tabaibas, and small specimens of drago, a historic wine press, and views of the Teide. The entrance is affordable and allows you to get close to the base of the tree to appreciate its real scale. On the other hand, from the Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres Square it is also possible to see it without entering the park, although from further away.

The Cave of the Wind

The Cave of the Wind, in the neighborhood of Los Piquetes, is one of the largest and most complex volcanic tubes in the world. With over 17 kilometers of galleries, it is the largest volcanic tube in Europe and the fifth in the world. It was formed about 27,000 years ago by the external cooling of a lava flow that kept the magma flowing inside. It also houses a cave fauna of great scientific value, with endemic species that are not found anywhere else on the planet.

Visits are guided, with a daily limited quota and with helmet and flashlight equipment, as the cave has no artificial lighting. Therefore, it is advisable to book in advance on its official website. It is a unique experience that allows understanding the volcanic character of Tenerife from the inside.
