Webcams of Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands after Tenerife and also the easternmost of the archipelago. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it is 100 km from the north coast of Africa and, in fact, along with Lanzarote, it is also the driest island in the Canaries. It is part of the province of Las Palmas and is divided into six municipalities: in addition to the capital, Puerto del Rosario, there are Antigua, Betancuria, La Oliva, Pájara, and Tuineje.

Fuerteventura is known for its unique landscape, shaped by volcanic eruptions. Much of the interior, with its wide plains and volcanic relief, is made up of natural parks and protected areas that can be explored by off-road vehicle. The vastness of its volcanic landscape and the variety of its 152 beaches earned it the title of Biosphere Reserve in 2019.

The capital of the island is Puerto del Rosario (40,000 inhabitants), and the Fuerteventura airport is located 5 kilometers away and was built in 1966. In the urban and rural areas of Fuerteventura, there are countless testimonies of the island’s rich history, such as historic churches, windmills, museums, and manor houses.

Of course, the most touristy areas are those on the coast. To the north, there’s Corralejo, with its nightlife and from where you can take a ferry to the island of Lobos. To the east, there’s Caleta de Fuste, not far from the capital. Further to the south, there’s the famous hotel area of Costa Calma. Finally, there’s the lively town of Morro Jable, at the southern end of the island.

Don’t miss: the Corralejo Natural Park, the Tindaya Mountain, the hiking route to the Gairía Caldera, and the Jandìa Natural Park.

The island is very popular among water sports enthusiasts who, thanks to favorable winds, can enjoy surfing, windsurfing, and water skiing. The reference beach in this case is Sotavento Beach. Turtles are also a constant presence in Fuerteventura, and every year they return in large numbers to Cofete Beach to lay their eggs. Fuerteventura has other beautiful and very special beaches such as Vigocho Beach and Concha Beach in El Cotillo.
