The only source of energy was a small hydroelectric plant built in the R\u00edo ravine, in the municipality of Valverde. But there was a problem: <strong>cash was scarce<\/strong>, and many local transactions were paralyzed due to lack of liquidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the face of this situation, the neighbors devised a revolutionary solution: to issue <strong>bonds that represented hours or amounts of electricity consumed or contributed to the community system<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These bonds\u2014printed on paper and signed by local authorities\u2014began to circulate as <strong>a valid means of payment<\/strong> in stores, for salaries, and even in transactions between individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-como-funcionaba-la-moneda-electrica\">How did the electric currency work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each bond equaled a specific amount of kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. Those who paid with one of these bonds not only acquired a good or service, but also <strong>indirectly supported the maintenance of the local energy infrastructure<\/strong>. It was a virtuous circle: more use of the grid \u2192 more income to maintain it \u2192 greater stability of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model reflected a deep sense of <strong>community, collective responsibility, and self-sufficiency<\/strong>, values that still define Herre\u00f1o identity today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-un-legado-de-sostenibilidad-adelantado-a-su-tiempo\">A legacy of sustainability ahead of its time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most fascinating thing about this story is not only its originality, but its <strong>anticipation of the principles of circular economy and energy sovereignty<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the world discovered decades later the benefits of renewable energies and local currencies, El Hierro had already experimented with a system that <strong>directly linked energy consumption with everyday economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, El Hierro is internationally recognized as the <strong>first island in the world to operate 100% on renewable energies<\/strong>, thanks to the Gorona del Viento project.
