The most well-known is the Sand Nativity Scene of Las Canteras<\/strong>, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was born in 2006 and in the Christmas of 2025 it celebrated its twentieth edition. Each year, a team of sculptors from different countries works for weeks on the beach sand to create large-sized Nativity scenes, often with nods to the landscape and culture of the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has become one of the major Christmas events in the city: in its first twenty years, it has received more than three million visits, and only in 2024 about 260,000 people visited it. Entrance is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to make a sand nativity scene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creating a sand nativity scene is a technical feat. The sand is mixed with water and compacted into large blocks with the help of wooden molds. Then, the sculptors remove material with trowels, spatulas, knives, and brushes, from top to bottom, until the figures appear. It is a days-long job, exposed to sun and wind, that the public can watch live as it is built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of Las Canteras has inspired similar initiatives in other coastal municipalities of the islands, which in some Christmases set up their own nativity scenes or sand sculpture exhibitions.
