It was born plural, became mestizo, and today it expresses itself as a composite identity that coexists with the Spanish and European identities. For many islanders, saying 'I am Canarian' also means saying 'I am Spanish' and 'I am European', and each of these belongings is activated according to the context: in a pilgrimage in <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-in-la-gomera\/\">La Gomera<\/a>, in a Social Security office or during an Erasmus in Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-capas-historicas-que-se-superponen\">Historical layers that overlap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking about Canarian identity is talking about layers that add up without canceling each other out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aboriginal layer<\/strong>: the memory of ancient inhabitants, archaeology, toponymy, and symbols that are studied today in museums and cultural routes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hispanic and Portuguese layer<\/strong>: language, institutions, patron saint festivals, and many devotions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Atlantic layer<\/strong>: the routes with America, emigration and return, the wine trade, and music that dialogues with the Caribbean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>European layer<\/strong>: the Statute of Autonomy and belonging to the European Union as an Outermost Region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This integration was not linear or harmonious. The conquest was traumatic, colonization reordered land and power, and emigration remixed cultural codes. From these frictions arose unique institutions, like the councils, and an Atlantic sensitivity that distinguishes the islands within Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-una-identidad-multiple\">A multiple identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most Canarians, identity is not a dilemma but a sum of belongings: the island, the archipelago, Spain, and Europe. Each level is activated in different situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The island<\/strong>: the neighborhood, the pilgrimage, the sports club, the council, and the island media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The archipelago<\/strong>: the timple, fol\u00edas, Canarian wrestling, Canarias Day (May 30), and the regional radio and television.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spain<\/strong>: social rights, healthcare, the Constitution, and the national team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Europe<\/strong>: the euro, European citizenship, Erasmus programs, and cooperation with other outermost regions such as the Azores, Madeira, or Guadeloupe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cultura-viva\">Living culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canarian identity is recognized, first and foremost, in its culture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Language and accent<\/strong>: a Spanish with its own phonetics and lexicon, with Andalusian and Portuguese heritage and Caribbean echoes from the back and forth emigration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Music and dance<\/strong>: isas, fol\u00edas, and malague\u00f1as, with the timple as emblem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knowledge and sports<\/strong>: the silbo gomero, Canarian wrestling, or the shepherd\u2019s jump, which transitioned from work technique to sport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this is renewed: young people mix the timple with electronic music, schools teach silbo, and wrestling clubs train new generations. And in daily life, words like <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/the-origin-of-the-word-guagua\/\">bus<\/a>, machango, baifo, or magua; dishes like sancocho, gofio, or wrinkled potatoes with mojo, and festivals like the <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/name-of-the-famous-carnival-of-tenerife\/\">carnivals<\/a> or the pilgrimages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-pleito-insular\">The insular dispute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The so-called island dispute between Tenerife and <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-gran-canaria\/\">Gran Canaria<\/a> has more than a century of history. It began as a struggle between elites for capital, infrastructure, and universities, and ended up moving into politics and football. Today, Canarias has two capitals that share the institutional headquarters and two public universities, and the rivalry survives mainly in the derbies between UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife and in daily humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-autonomia-y-politica\">Autonomy and politics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The political expression of Canarian identity has been mainly through self-government: the Statute of Autonomy, the Government of Canarias, the island councils, and the Economic and Fiscal Regime. In Parliament, state-level parties coexist with Canarian nationalist and regionalist formations and with island groups, such as those from <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-el-hierro\/\">El Hierro<\/a> or La Gomera. Independence options exist, but their electoral representation has been minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diferencias-entre-islas-y-generaciones\">Differences between islands and generations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living the identity is not the same from a neighborhood in <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-tenerife\/la-laguna\/\">La Laguna<\/a>, a gomero settlement or a majorero village. In the capital islands, urban aspects weigh more; in the smaller islands, tradition and family networks; and in tourist areas, daily coexistence with visitors and residents from many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent immigration and the return of Canarians from the Peninsula or America add new layers. Biographies from Venezuela, Senegal, Italy, or Germany are already part of the human landscape of the islands and expand, without denying, Canarian identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-escuela-medios-y-cultura\">School, media, and culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools, regional radio and television, museums, and cultural institutions have been crucial for a common identity to reach from La Restinga to <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-fuerteventura\/la-oliva\/corralejo-viejo-beach\/\">Corralejo<\/a>. And language acts as a great glue: it is not a distinct language but a Spanish with a unique musicality that makes any Canarian recognizable in just a few minutes of conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-comparaciones-con-otros-archipielagos\">Comparisons with other archipelagos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Azores and Madeira share with Canarias the condition of outermost regions, intense diasporas, and strong institutions with regionalism. The Balearics, on the other hand, articulate their identity around a distinct language, Catalan, and Galicia combines a strong cultural identity with a long history of emigration to America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retos-de-futuro\">Future challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dependence on tourism and the need to diversify the economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure on housing in tourist areas and capitals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cost of energy and transportation in a fragmented territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The arrival of migrants by sea and their reception.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vulnerability to climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the face of these challenges, Canarias has assets such as science (astrophysics, oceanography, renewable energies), culture, and cooperation with Madeira, Azores, or Cape Verde. Imagine a Canarias Day where, after a wrestling match, a young group mixes isas with electronic music and a school choir whistles a song. In the stands, there are grandparents who emigrated to Venezuela and grandchildren who arrived from Dakar, neighbors from Arucas and from <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-tenerife\/la-orotava\/\">La Orotava<\/a>.
