The indomitable Canary Island: history and mystery<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Imagine a volcanic, green, and rugged territory that for centuries remained off the radar of the power that shaped the political map of the Mediterranean. La Palma was not Roman. An island that ancient chroniclers mentioned in passing in their texts, as if they were speaking of a place of fable and adventure, where mountains and even a small hill rose in notable geographical isolation. That Atlantic corner exists, and today we traverse it with a historical, archaeological, and curious gaze, from the echoes of antiquity to the current trails, emphasizing its rugged and volcanic geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classic myths, ancient texts, and eloquent silences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Authors like Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy cited the Fortunate Islands, a common reference to a distant archipelago known to the Romans\u2014or more broadly, the Roman Empire\u2014by hearsay. The cartography of those Canary Islands was imprecise, as expected of a little-frequented frontier, but it hinted at islands with large dogs, mountains, small hills, and coasts difficult for coastal navigation. La Palma fits into that mosaic, also called Benahoare by its pre-Hispanic inhabitants and by its Guanche toponymy (e.g., Acer\u00f3, in reference to the Caldera de Taburiente), whose mountains and ravines encapsulate well that idea of a secluded place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a key point:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rome did not occupy or colonize any Canary Island in a stable manner. There is evidence, such as certain Roman amphorae, of occasional contacts in the eastern islands, especially remains of vessels that refer to stops by navigators. In contrast, the record for La Palma is scarce to almost silent. The absence of Roman signs\u2014and therefore the lack of an organized Roman conquest\u2014does not by itself prove that they never arrived, but it does suggest that if they did, they were occasional visits without the establishment of an administration or garrisons that would manifest Roman pragmatism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This archaeological silence, combined with the Palms' topography composed of volcanic mountains and ravines, has fed a reasonable certainty: La Palma was not conquered by the Roman Empire. No garrisons, no villae, no natural ports with safe anchorages, unlike other islands where coastal navigation facilitated communication. Nothing that allows for a discussion of dominance. And that, at a time when vaults, roads, and milestones were erected across the world, is striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Rome looked the other way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reasons are less romantic than they seem and, at the same time, are imbued with notable Roman pragmatism. For an empire that benefited from both its self-sufficient economy and its military and commercial interests, the Canary equation did not compensate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
