This majestic specimen is not only a historical reference but also a cultural and natural one. It is native to <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-tenerife\/\">Tenerife<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-gran-canaria\/\">Gran Canaria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-la-palma\/\">La Palma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-in-la-gomera\/\">La Gomera<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/en\/webcams-of-el-hierro\/\">El Hierro<\/a>, especially famous is the <strong>Drago de Icod <\/strong>, admired by scientists and artists for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The naturalist Alexander von Humboldt mentioned the Drago de Franchy when he traveled to Teide in 1799. Later, Marianne North depicted it in the gardens of Sitio Litre, in Puerto de la Cruz. These testimonies have turned the dragon tree into an <strong>international symbol of the Canary Islands <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-63.png\" alt=\"milenarian dragon tree, Tree with long, pointed leaves, probably a palm or similar, in a natural setting with grass and other plants.\" class=\"wp-image-143438\" style=\"width:224px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the Milenary Drago de Icod, there are other notable specimens in municipalities such as Los Realejos, Tacoronte, La Laguna, and Garaf\u00eda. In Gran Canaria, the <strong>Dracaena tamaranae <\/strong>, discovered in Santa Br\u00edgida in the late 20th century, stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interest in preserving Canary flora led to the declaration of the dragon tree as a <strong>vegetal symbol of Tenerife <\/strong>in 1991. This tree species has a branched trunk, long leaves, and orange fruits. Its red sap was used by the ancient inhabitants of the islands as a medicinal remedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-64.png\" alt=\"Milenarian dragon tree, Canary Islands, arid climate, adapted to dry conditions, spiny leaves, wide and dense crown.\" class=\"wp-image-143439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-64.png 960w, https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-64-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-64-768x297.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the Milenary Drago de Icod is at the center of a movement led by \u00c1lvaro Fajardo for it to be recognized as a <strong>Natural Heritage of Humanity <\/strong>.
