In fact, it was here that sugar cane was first cultivated, which later traveled to America with Christopher Columbus in 1493. This connection between the Canaries and the Caribbean marked the beginning of an industry that today defines cultures and flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-49.png\" alt=\"history of rum\" class=\"wp-image-143411\" style=\"width:730px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-49.png 640w, https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-49-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-origen-del-ron-en-canarias\">Origin of rum in the Canaries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the 16th century, Gran Canaria and other Canary Islands had <strong>\"sugar mills\" <\/strong>, small factories that processed sugar cane. These places were near waterways and farms, making production easier. Canarian sugar was exported all over Europe, gaining great fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, with the increase in production in America and the lack of currency in the Canaries, this industry declined. There they helped develop the rum industry. It is said that it was a slave who accidentally discovered how to ferment molasses from the cane, resulting in the first distillate similar to modern rum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonizers saw the potential and began producing it in large quantities. Soon, rum became the favorite drink of pirates, sailors, and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-51.png\" alt=\"history of rum\" class=\"wp-image-143413\" style=\"width:730px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-51.png 600w, https:\/\/canariaslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-51-300x80.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ron-y-cocteles-famosos\">Rum and famous cocktails<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most iconic moments in the history of rum was the birth of the <strong>'Cuba Libre' <\/strong>, following a spontaneous toast by American soldiers in 1898. Cocktails such as <strong>mojito <\/strong>, inspired by the pirate Francis Drake, and <strong>daiquiri <\/strong>, a favorite of Ernest Hemingway, also emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
