A few steps away, the Cruz de Monta\u00f1\u00e9s from 1759 recalls the seafaring origins of a site that was a parade ground and a precursor to the port. Between the two, the historic Pila \u2014public fountain of the 18th century recovered in 1986\u2014 completes a set that tells centuries of urban life in just a few square meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The historical imprint coexists with the 20th century without stridency. The former headquarters of the C\u00edrculo Mercantil, now Chamber of Commerce, built in 1935 by Marrero Regalado, exhibits rationalist lines softened by regional nods. Next to it, bank buildings from the 1950s introduced modernity without abandoning the palette of island basalt tones.
